My face looks horrible because I have a lot of old chicken pox scars. Are injectable fillers at all effective in treating this?
Fillers can sometimes provide improvement in the appearance of chicken pox and acne scars. Fillers help by reducing the depth of the pit or depression in the skin, which can soften the appearance of these scars. However, chicken pox scars often have discoloration of the skin, which won’t necessarily be improved by the filler. Hyaluronic acids are temporary fillers that can be utilized for this purpose. Examples of such fillers, include Restylane which can be injected superficially into the skin to improve depressed scars. If Restylane provides a good result, permanent fillers such as Silicone have been used for this purpose as well. Another treatment modality to consider is laser resurfacing or chemical peels to improve the appearance of the your scars. While laser resurfacing will not completely erase your scars it may be able to improve their discoloration and soften their appearance. To give you further recommendations on the best treatment of your chicken pox scars, it would be best to evaluate your skin in person at one of our facial plastic surgery practices in Chevy Chase, Maryland or Reston, Virginia.
