What Jawline Contouring Can Do
A defined jawline frames the whole face. Filler sharpens the edge of the jaw and chin, and Botox slims a wide jaw, with no surgery and no downtime.
What Is Jawline Contouring?
Jawline contouring shapes the lower face without surgery, using two tools. Hyaluronic acid filler, a firm gel that holds its shape, is placed along the jawbone, the angle of the jaw and the chin to add definition. Botox, placed in the masseter muscle at the back of the jaw, relaxes the muscle so it slowly becomes smaller, which slims a wide or square jaw.
Some patients need filler, some need Botox, and some need both. The fillers we use contain lidocaine to keep the treatment comfortable, are not permanent, and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if it is ever needed.
For women, the goal is a soft, defined edge, not a square jaw. Small droplets of filler along the jawline and the angle of the jaw create a subtle shadow beneath the jaw while keeping it feminine. A little filler in the chin often does as much as the jaw itself. Most women need about one syringe per side.
For men, filler goes deep, on top of the bone and muscle at the angle of the jaw, to build a stronger, more chiseled jaw and chin. A defined jaw also adds width from the front, which suits a masculine face. Most men need 4 to 6 syringes, often built up over more than one visit.
For a wide or square jaw, the answer is often the opposite of filler. Botox in the masseter muscle slims the lower face for a softer, V-shaped look.

How Dr. Naderi Approaches Jawline Contouring
Jawline filler is easy to overdo. Too much filler on a woman’s jaw can make the face look wide and masculine from the front, even when the side view looks sharp. We look at the face from every angle and treat the jaw, chin and cheeks as one picture.

How we contour the jaw
- Small droplets, not threads. Filler goes in as small droplets rather than long threads from a cannula, which can leave a strip of filler under the skin.
- Deep where it needs to be. At the angle of the jaw, filler sits on top of the bone and muscle to push the contour out. Toward the back of the jaw, injections stay more superficial to protect the parotid gland.
- Built up over time. Enough filler to see a real difference, then a little more at a follow-up visit if you want it.
- Slimmer when wider is the problem. When a strong masseter muscle makes the jaw square, Botox slims it instead of adding filler.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Jawline Contouring?
Jawline contouring is a good fit if you have:
- A soft or poorly defined jawline
- A small or short chin that weakens the profile
- Early jowls or a jawline that is starting to soften with age
- Volume loss along the jaw after weight loss, including on Zepbound or Ozempic
- A wide or square jaw from a strong masseter muscle, often in people who clench or grind
- A wish for a stronger, more chiseled jaw, common in men
We will suggest something else when:
- Skin is loose and the jowls are heavy along the jaw and neck. A deep plane facelift or neck lift lifts it; filler cannot without overfilling.
- Fullness under the chin hides the jawline. Submental liposuction or Kybella removes it.
- The chin needs more projection than filler can give. A chin implant is permanent.

What Happens During a Jawline Contouring Appointment?
Jawline filler and masseter Botox are done in the office, usually in one visit. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes for numbing cream before filler.

What Does the Research Say About Jawline Contouring?
Both jawline filler and masseter Botox have been studied for years. Two papers worth knowing:
Jawline filler is effective and safe in the right hands
A review of nonsurgical jawline rejuvenation found that a well-defined jawline strongly shapes how attractive a face looks in both men and women, and that hyaluronic acid filler is an effective, temporary option for mild to moderate loss of jawline definition. The authors stress that good results depend on knowing the anatomy, choosing patients carefully and adjusting the technique for men and women.

Masseter Botox made the muscle about 31% thinner
In a study of 383 patients treated with botulinum toxin in the masseter muscle and followed for at least 3 months, ultrasound showed the muscle was on average 31% thinner at 3 months. Slimming was usually visible within 2 to 4 weeks, and 93% of patients were satisfied, with no long-term side effects reported.

How to Prepare for Jawline Contouring
For 2 weeks before, avoid nuts, seeds, fish and fish oil, aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and supplements that thin the blood, such as vitamin E. This lowers your chance of bruising. If you take a prescription blood thinner, ask the doctor who prescribed it; never stop a medicine you need for a cosmetic treatment. See our full Botox and filler instructions.
If you get cold sores, tell us before your visit. Your physician will prescribe an antiviral medicine to start before your injections.
Arnica, started a few days before, may help bruises fade faster.
On the day, eat and drink normally, come with little or no makeup, and arrive about 30 minutes early for numbing cream.
Have an event coming up? Plan your jawline filler at least 2 weeks before, so any swelling or bruising has time to settle.
What Is Recovery Like After Jawline Contouring?
Most people go back to work and their normal routine the same day. Expect some swelling and tenderness, and possibly a bruise, for the first several days.

Rare but serious
Filler can block a blood vessel. Signs include severe pain, skin that turns white, gray or blotchy, and changes in vision. Rarely, filler toward the back of the jaw can irritate the parotid (salivary) gland or cause an infection, and masseter Botox can spread to a nearby muscle and make the smile look uneven for a few weeks. Careful depth and placement lower these risks, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved right away if it is ever needed.

Why filler can look “migrated”

Can jawline filler be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Jawline filler is often combined with chin filler, cheek filler and masseter Botox for a balanced lower face. Fullness under the chin may be better treated with Kybella or submental liposuction.
Is jawline filler safe?
In experienced hands, yes. The main risks are swelling and bruising. Rare but serious risks include filler blocking a blood vessel and, toward the back of the jaw, irritation of the parotid (salivary) gland or infection. Careful depth and placement lower these risks, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if it is ever needed.
Can jawline filler be dissolved?
