What is a Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a procedure which involves the functional reconstruction of the nasal airway. The purpose of the surgery is to provide better airflow in patients who are suffering from nasal airway obstruction.
Does medical insurance cover the cost of septoplasty?
In many cases, yes. In certain situations, a letter may need to be dictated to your insurance carrier in order to obtain their approval. To make things as simple as possible for you, we will help to guide you through the process.
Septoplasty FAQs
There are a variety of conditions which may cause the sensation of a ‘blocked nasal passage’ including a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, collapse of the external nasal valve, narrowing of the nasal internal valve, scar tissue from previous surgery, and functional disorders of the inner lining, mucosa, or nose. All of these may lead to turbulent airflow or airflow resistance, resulting in symptoms of nasal obstruction. Dr. Naderi, who is a true rhinoplasty surgeon with an otolaryngology (ENT) background, has the skills necessary to identify and correct these problems. In fact, many of the ‘tough’ cases in Washington DC Area, Chevy Chase, Virginia, and of local ENT surgeons are referred to Dr. Naderi because his ability and holistic approach allow him to address all issues which may be contributing to a problem.
Yes. In fact, there are several reasons why it’s often best to perform these surgeries at the same time. Regardless of whether your insurance company pays for some of your surgery or not, combining surgeries allows you to save on the hospital and anesthesia fees. Furthermore, cartilage removed from the septum in order to straighten it can be used during rhinoplasty surgery for grafts. Postponing aesthetic rhinoplasty until after your septoplasty may mean that septal cartilage is not available for use as grafts and may require that cartilage be taken from your ears or ribs. Combining the surgeries also allows for a single week-long recovery rather than two separate ones.
Nasal reconstruction is a procedure which rebuilds the nose. There are several reasons why nasal reconstruction may be necessary including poor results from a previous rhinoplasty procedure, trauma, dog bites, and cancer.
While the exact nature of the nasal reconstruction procedure will depend upon the type of injury and the extent of tissue loss, the technique may involve anything from simple local flaps and small composite grafts to more complex staged local flaps. Many patients are routinely referred from other physicians and otolaryngologists to Dr. Naderi for nasal reconstruction surgery when they are also considering cosmetic rhinoplasty procedure.
Because smoking restricts the blood flow to the skin, this can delay healing and promote infections. Smoking is an absolute contraindication in cases where flaps are used as there is a very high risk of the flaps not taking in smokers.
Sinus surgery is performed to help clear the passages of the sinus and improve an individuals breathing. Sinus surgery can be combined with a rhinoplasty surgery. Although Dr. Naderi exclusively performs rhinoplasty surgery, he does work closely with a group of fantastic local ENT surgeons that can correct sinus problems. Dr. Naderi would first have you evaluated by an otolaryngologist to ensure that sinus surgery is in your best interest. If the ENT surgeon feels that your breathing will be greatly improved with sinus surgery, our patient coordinators will work with the ENTs office to coordinate a co-case between Dr. Naderi and the ENT specialist. This way you have the luxury of having two expert surgeons in one operating room each performing their area of specialization. At The Naderi Center we put patient safety and convenience as a top priority and coordinating your surgical care is our responsibility.
