Cheek augmentation, also known as malar or submalar augmentation, is a plastic surgery procedure which uses implants to add definition and fullness to the cheekbones. Cheek augmentation can add a more balanced appearance to the face. The surgery may be performed on its own or it may be combined with other procedures like a facelift.
There are several alternatives to cheek augmentation including the midface lift, fat injections, and filler injections like Artefill.
Cheek implants can be made from a variety of materials including Gore-Tex, solid silicone and other substances.
If you are healthy and looking to improve definition in the mid face area or cheekbones, you may be a good candidate for cheek augmentation.
During a consultation for cheek augmentation, Dr. Naderi will examine your face, take a thorough medical history and discuss your goals. All aspects of the cheek implant surgery will be explained including the technique, the anesthesia, the facility, the recovery, the risks, the costs and so on.
Dr. Naderi performs cheek augmentation at INOVA system hospitals which include Fair Oaks Hospital, Loudoun Hospital, Fairfax Hospital, and Mt. Vernon Hospital.
General anesthesia or MAC (monitored anesthesia care) may be used for cheek augmentation.
Incisions are made inside of the lip and then an appropriately sized implant is inserted under each cheekbone. The incisions are then closed.
Cheek augmentation takes thirty to forty-five minutes to perform.
The incisions for cheek augmentation are made inside of the upper lip.
The incisions made for cheek augmentation are located on the inside of the upper lip and leave no visible scarring.
Some discomfort may result from cheek augmentation but this can be controlled with medication.
Recovery after cheek augmentation takes about a week. Patients may have difficulty moving the mouth and lips at first, and dietary restrictions may be necessary.
Patients can return to work in about one week after cheek augmentation.
Patients will need to wait at least two weeks after the cheek implant procedure before partaking in strenuous activities or exercise.
Cheek augmentation is typically performed with absorbable sutures which dissolve on their own and need not be removed.
All surgery carries potential risks. Those associated with cheek implants include infection and the need for removal (1%).
Insurance typically does not cover cheek augmentation procedures when they are performed for purely cosmetic purposes, though patients should be sure to check with their own insurance company.
Financing is available for many plastic surgery procedures.
