Buttock augmentation is a procedure which can create a fuller, rounder and more shapely backside through the use of implants or fat transfer.
If you are healthy, have realistic expectations for improvement, and are looking to enhance the buttocks, buttock augmentation may be right for you.
Buttock implants are often made of silicone.
Fat transfer is a procedure which removes excess fat from a donor area, such as the abdomen or thighs, and then transfers the fat to another area of the body, in this case the buttocks.
During a consultation for buttock augmentation, the surgeon examine the buttock area, take a thorough medical history, and discuss your goals. A treatment plan will be recommended and all aspects of the procedure will be explained including the anesthesia, the facility, the recovery, the risks, the costs and so on.
General anesthesia or light sleep sedation may be used for buttock augmentation.
For buttock augmentation with implants, a two- to three-inch incision is made in the buttock area and the implant is then inserted. For buttock augmentation with fat transfer, a small incision is made in a donor area, such as the thighs or abdomen, and fat is gently removed through liposuction. The fat is purified and then injected into the buttock area.
Buttock augmentation takes about one and a half to two hours to perform.
For buttock augmentation with implants, the incision may be located within the crease between the buttocks or in the crease where the thigh and buttock meet. For fat transfer, the incision is a very small one located in the donor area.
The incision made for buttock augmentation does result in scars, however they tend to be small and/or well-concealed.
Buttock augmentation can involve some discomfort, though this can be controlled with medication.
Recovery after fat transfer tends to be milder than the recovery after implants. Patients can expect a recovery of about four weeks after buttock augmentation with implants, and swelling and bruising may occur. A compression garment may need to be worn for a period of time.
Patients can return to work within five to seven days after fat transfer and in about ten days after implant surgery.
Stitches are removed in about ten days after buttock augmentation with implants and, if necessary, in about seven days after fat transfer.
All surgery carries potential risks. Fat transfer tends to involve minimal risk but may include infection. The risks of implants may include infection, implant shifting, and asymmetry.
Insurance usually does not cover buttock augmentation when it is performed for purely cosmetic purposes, though patients should check with their own insurance companies.
Financing is available for many plastic surgery procedures.
