Cheek augmentation, also known as malar or submalar augmentation, is a procedure which can add definition and fullness to the cheekbones and create a more balanced look. Cheek augmentation may be achieved with the use of implants which are made from a variety of safe synthetic materials. The procedure may be performed on its own or in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift. Good candidates for cheek implants include healthy patients who are seeking increased definition in the mid face structures or cheekbones.
Dr. Naderi performs cheek augmentation in one of the INOVA system hospitals, which include Fair Oaks Hospital, Loudoun Hospital, Fairfax Hospital, and Mt. Vernon Hospital. The surgery takes about thirty to forty-five minutes to complete. Anesthetic options include MAC (monitored anesthesia care) and general anesthesia.
The incisions for cheek augmentation are made inside of the upper lip. Appropriately sized implants are then inserted under the cheekbones and the incisions are closed. Recovery after cheek augmentation takes about seven days. Moving the mouth and lips may be difficult at first, and dietary restrictions may be necessary. Any discomfort that patients experience can be controlled with medication. Sutures need not be removed as they will dissolve on their own. Most patients are able to return to work in about a week, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for about two weeks.
There are several alternatives to cheek implants which include the midface lift and fat or filler injections such as Artefill.
