Rhinoplasty can improve how your nose looks and how it works. A nose in balance with the rest of your face brings facial harmony and often more self-confidence. When the surgery also corrects the airway, patients breathe better.
Best Age for Rhinoplasty
There is no single best age for a nose job. What matters is that the nose has finished growing, that you are healthy, and that the decision is your own.
Is there an upper age limit? No. There is no upper age limit for rhinoplasty as long as you are healthy. In older patients, lifting a drooping tip can make the whole face look more rested and youthful. Many patients who wanted a nose job for years finally have it later in life and are glad they did.
Teenage Rhinoplasty
The minimum age for rhinoplasty with Dr. Naderi is 14, and only when the face has essentially finished growing. A teenager who is still growing should wait.
Maturity matters more than the number. Dr. Naderi looks at the mindset of the individual: why this young person wants surgery, what he or she expects from it, and whether those expectations are realistic. Some 14-year-olds are ready. Some adults are not.
Dr. Naderi is never quick to operate on a young patient. He often brings teenagers back for more than one visit to talk before any plan is made, and he tells some to come back in a year or two. He also works to learn whether the wish for surgery is the patient’s own or is being pushed by a parent, a relative or friends. The decision has to belong to the person having the surgery.

Computer Imaging: See Your New Nose Before Surgery
Computer imaging is the clearest way for you and your surgeon to agree on a plan. Dr. Naderi morphs your own photos on a large screen during the consultation, so you can see the proposed nose on your face and ask for changes before surgery, not after the cast comes off.
Take a dorsal hump as an example. Every surgeon will plan to remove it, but how much comes off decides whether the profile ends up straight, slightly curved or scooped. Imaging lets you choose.
Dr. Naderi does the imaging himself, because the surgeon doing the surgery is the one who knows what is surgically realistic. Imaging is not a guarantee of the outcome. A plan designed for your nose. No two noses are alike, so no two surgical plans are alike. After your consultation and examination with Dr. Naderi, you receive a personalized proposal that reflects the surgery he has designed for you.
How to Prepare for Rhinoplasty
- Stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery. Smoking impairs your circulation and slows healing.
- Review your medications with us, including over-the-counter products, vitamins and herbal supplements.
- Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, and products that contain them, before and after surgery. They interfere with clotting and can cause bleeding.
- Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) if you need a pain reliever or fever reducer.
How Rhinoplasty Is Performed
Rhinoplasty takes about two hours under general anesthesia. Dr. Naderi works through incisions inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or adds one small incision between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty) to reach the cartilage and bone that give the nose its shape.
He then reshapes that framework. Depending on your nose, he may reduce a hump, narrow the nasal bones, or lift, shorten, refine or support the tip. To make a nose smaller he removes cartilage or bone. To build or support it he adds cartilage grafts.
When there is enough of it, Dr. Naderi prefers to use your own septal cartilage, taken from the nasal septum, the wall that divides the two air passages. If previous surgery has left too little septum, he may use rib cartilage, either your own or donor rib.
When the framework is finished, the skin is laid back over it and takes on the new shape. A small splint supports the nose while it heals. Dr. Naderi does not routinely use nasal packing.
Rhinoplasty Recovery, Week by Week
Plan on one week off work or school. A small cast stays on your nose for 5 to 10 days, and exercise waits for one month.

How the Nose Changes as It Heals
The photos you see right after surgery, at one week or even at one month are not the final result. Downtime for most patients is about a week, and most of the healing happens in the first year. After that the changes are subtle. Over the next 3 to 5 years the tip keeps settling, the nose moves in closer to the face and it gains definition, especially with thick skin.

Patients fly in from across the country and abroad for rhinoplasty with Dr. Naderi. Our team plans the trip with you so that you make as few visits as possible. Our guide for out-of-town and international patients covers scheduling, travel and recovery in full.
- Start with a virtual consultation. You send photos ahead of time using our rhinoplasty photo guide. The surgical consultation fee is $250 for primary rhinoplasty and $500 for revision rhinoplasty, and includes an in-person visit with Dr. Naderi.
- Receive your surgery plan. Your proposal arrives by email, and a patient coordinator walks you through scheduling.
- Arrive one to two days before surgery. You meet Dr. Naderi in person before your procedure. Pre-operative testing is done with your own doctor within 30 days of surgery.
- Stay for one week after surgery. Then you can travel home.
- Follow up from home. Your one-month visit is done by telehealth.

Anesthesia for Rhinoplasty
Dr. Naderi performs rhinoplasty under general anesthesia. You are fully asleep, comfortable and still for the whole operation, which matters in a surgery measured in millimeters. A breathing tube protects your airway, and a board-certified anesthesiologist stays with you from start to finish.
Rhinoplasty Techniques: From Its History to Today
Rhinoplasty is one of the oldest operations in plastic surgery. In the 16th century the Italian surgeon Gasparo Tagliacozzi rebuilt noses with skin taken from the arm. In the late 1800s John Orlando Roe, an ENT surgeon in Rochester, New York, performed the first closed rhinoplasty, and Jacques Joseph of Berlin carried the technique forward. Modern Rhinoplasty Techniques Dr. Naderi Uses
- Preservation rhinoplasty. Keeps your natural bridge and its support intact and lowers it from underneath, in place of removing a hump and rebuilding the bridge. Dr. Naderi uses it in select patients. Read more about preservation rhinoplasty.
- Ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty. Shapes the nasal bones with an ultrasonic instrument in fine, controlled steps in place of traditional chisels and rasps. Dr. Naderi uses it in select patients.
- Structural rhinoplasty. Supports the tip and bridge with grafts of your own cartilage, usually from the septum, so the nose keeps its shape as it heals.
- Closed and open approaches. Dr. Naderi performs both and chooses the approach for each nose.
- Computer imaging. He does the imaging himself, so you see a surgically realistic plan before surgery.
Rhinoplasty is widely considered the most difficult operation in plastic surgery. It is three-dimensional surgery measured in millimeters, and it takes a surgeon who understands both the shape of the nose and how it breathes. Dr. Naderi does not use technique names for marketing. He chooses what each nose needs.
A good candidate for rhinoplasty is healthy, both physically and mentally, wants to improve the nose, and does not expect a new nose to change his or her life. The goal of a nose job is to improve the nose and balance the face. A good result often brings real self-confidence. It will not bring a better job or a better relationship.
Rhinoplasty is permanent. It does not wear off in a few months like Botox, and it does not grow back like a haircut. That is why Dr. Naderi takes the time to understand why you want surgery before he agrees to do it. He always does what is right for the patient, and he is never quick to operate.
What Dr. Naderi Looks For
- Your own decision. The wish for surgery should be yours. He looks closely at whether a parent, partner, relative or friends are the ones pushing for it.
- Realistic expectations. Computer imaging at your consultation shows what surgery can and cannot do for your nose.
- The right time. He asks some patients to wait and come back, and he advises against surgery when it is not in your best interest.
- Body dysmorphic disorder. A patient with body dysmorphic disorder should almost never have cosmetic rhinoplasty, so he screens for it.
- Many previous surgeries. A patient who is still unhappy after several well-done rhinoplasties is unlikely to be satisfied by another one.
Family and friends can be a strong support. They can also do harm with criticism and badly timed comments. Dr. Naderi would much rather meet a parent who thinks the child does not need a nose job than a parent who is the driving force behind it.
Rhinoplasty for Facial Feminization
Dr. Naderi helps patients who are seeking facial feminization. The nose sits at the center of the face, and refining it can move the whole face toward a softer, more feminine look. Depending on your nose, that may mean a smaller bridge, a narrower nose or a more refined tip.

How do I choose a rhinoplasty surgeon?
What is the difference between rhinoplasty and septoplasty, and can they be done together?
A septoplasty is a procedure that straightens the septum to provide better airflow in patients who are suffering from a deviated septum. Surgeons often perform rhinoplasty and septoplasty together. Cartilage removed from the septum in order to straighten your nose can be used during rhinoplasty surgery for grafts. Postponing aesthetic rhinoplasty until after your septoplasty may mean that septal cartilage is not available for use as grafts and may require that cartilage be taken from your ears or ribs. Combining the surgeries also allows for a single week-long recovery, rather than two separate ones.
What are the risks of rhinoplasty?
Is it normal for the nasal tip to be hard after rhinoplasty?
To some extent, yes, because a rhinoplasty will create swelling and scar tissue which is hard, but grafts will also add firmness to the nose during a rhinoplasty. Much of that firmness softens over time, most of it in the first year, but some of it stays.
Can the front view be fixed with rhinoplasty?
The nose is a three-dimensional structure. Changing one view will affect the other views as well but you are not alone. I have had many patients who have had very nice profiles but they either did not like their nasal tip or bulbous tip or they did not like their wide nasal bridge or even had a crooked bridge despite a nice profile. While your profile may change slightly, the nose as a whole should improve and the nose can be narrowed and refined from the front view with a rhinoplasty

Generally speaking, individuals can undergo rhinoplasty once the cartilage in their nose has stopped growing. This is typically around the age of 14-15 for girls and 16-17 for boys. Is rhinoplasty painful?
Rhinoplasty may involve some discomfort, but it is easily controlled with pain medication. Some patients develop a dull headache and/or experience an ache in their nose. Patients should not feel any severe pain and if they do they should notify their surgeon immediately.
How soon after my consultation can I have rhinoplasty?
Typically, the surgery is scheduled within a few weeks to a couple of months after the consultation. This period allows time for pre-operative testing and planning.
Will rhinoplasty be covered by insurance?
Most plastic surgery procedures are not covered by insurance, especially if performed for aesthetic reasons. Cosmetic rhinoplasty will typically not be covered by your insurance, but if the surgery is performed with the goal of improving a breathing problem portions of it may be. Please check with your own insurance provider to find out if and how much of your surgery they will pay for.
