Should You Get Tear Trough Filler?

For most people, Dr. Naderi says no. In patients with thin skin or little soft tissue under the eyes, tear trough filler can lead to swelling and a bluish-gray bag that lasts for years, so he points most patients to PRF gel injections or fat injections instead.

Key Points from Dr. Naderi

  1. Tear trough filler became very popular almost two decades ago, and over time doctors found it is not a good idea for some patients.
  2. Patients with thin skin or not much soft tissue under the eyes may look good for a few weeks, then develop swelling and a bluish-gray look similar to a Tyndall effect, which can be due to lymphatic blockage.
  3. If you want something non-surgical, he recommends PRF gel injections. For something more permanent, micro and nano fat injections.
  4. Some people can still have tear trough filler, but not most.

Tear trough fillers, should you do it? A lot of people still are asking for it. Tear troughs became extremely popular, this area underneath the eyes, many years ago, almost two decades ago. Everybody came in looking for eye bag improvement, dark eyelid improvement, dark circle improvement, no matter what you call it, it's a tear trough.

And we used to do a lot of fillers. And then slowly we discovered that fillers in that area, in some patients are not a good idea. People with thin skin, people that don't have a lot of soft tissue in that area, ended up looking good for a few weeks, but then they started getting swelling and what looks like a Tyndall effect, this bluish grayish bag, it could be due to lymphatic blockage, etc. And the thing lasted for years, many years.

So what's better? Well, if you want something non-surgical, it's PRF gel injections. If you want something more permanent, it's fat injections, micro and nano fat. Stay away from tear trough fillers for most people.

Some of you still can, but not most.
