VI Peel or HydraFacial? How to Choose the Right Treatment for Your Skin

A VI Peel being applied during an in-office skin treatment at The Naderi Center in Reston and Chevy Chase

Two treatments come up in nearly every skin consultation at The Naderi Center: the HydraFacial and the VI Peel. Both leave skin brighter and smoother, both are gentle enough for most skin types, and both are popular with patients from Reston, McLean and Great Falls to Bethesda and Northwest Washington. Yet they do very different jobs.

Here’s your guide to how they compare, what each one treats best and how we decide which belongs in your plan.

The short answer: a HydraFacial refreshes and hydrates with no downtime, while a VI Peel renews the outer layer of skin to fade sun spots, melasma and acne marks, with about a week of light peeling.

What is a HydraFacial?

A HydraFacial is a medical-grade facial that cleanses, gently exfoliates, extracts congested pores and infuses the skin with hydrating serums, all with a handheld device that feels cool and soothing. At The Naderi Center it takes about an hour and finishes with LightStim red light. You can return to work, dinner or an event the same day.

Think of the HydraFacial as excellent maintenance. It keeps pores clear, gives a lovely glow and is an easy way to prepare skin before an occasion. It works on the surface, so it is not designed to fade stubborn pigment or deeper texture.

What is a VI Peel?

A VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel applied in layers during a visit of about thirty minutes. It encourages the outer layer of skin to renew itself, so older, sun-damaged cells shed over the following days and fresher, more even skin comes through. Most patients find it painless.

For a day or two, the skin may look pink and feel tight. Gentle peeling usually follows from about day three to day six, and by the end of the week the skin looks brighter and feels smoother.

A HydraFacial keeps healthy skin looking its best. A VI Peel is how we change it, when sun spots, melasma or acne marks are what you want to fade.

How do the results compare?

After a HydraFacial, skin looks clean, plump and luminous right away, and the glow lasts for a week or two. Regular sessions keep pores clearer and makeup sitting more smoothly.

After a VI Peel, the change builds over the week and lasts longer. Brown spots soften, tone evens out and texture refines. For melasma and deeper pigment, a short series of peels with a medical-grade home routine brings the fullest result.

Which one is right for you?

A HydraFacial is usually the better choice if your skin feels congested or dull, if you want a refresh before a special evening, or if you prefer no downtime at all.

A VI Peel is usually the better choice if you see sun spots or age spots, melasma, uneven tone, early fine lines or the dark marks that breakouts leave behind, and you can allow about a week for gentle peeling.

If your concern is deeper wrinkles or acne scars, neither is the best tool. We would more likely recommend laser resurfacing, microneedling or Morpheus8.

Can you have both?

Yes, and many of our patients do. A HydraFacial is a beautiful way to maintain skin between peels, and some patients enjoy one before an event once their peel has fully healed. Your provider will space the treatments so your skin always has time to recover.

Where are these treatments offered?

HydraFacials and our other facials are performed at our Reston office, a short drive from Vienna, Herndon and McLean. VI Peels are offered in both Reston and our Chevy Chase office, one block from the Metro and an easy visit from Bethesda, Potomac and Northwest DC. Patients from Arlington and Alexandria often choose whichever office is most convenient that day.

Every skin plan at The Naderi Center is physician-led. Our physicians, including double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Shervin Naderi, and our licensed master aesthetician work together, so the treatment you receive is the one your skin truly needs.
