ZO Hydroquinone 4% Creams for Melasma and Dark Spots
For stubborn brown spots and melasma, hydroquinone is still one of the most effective topical treatments we have. ZO’s prescription Pigment Control creams combine 4% hydroquinone with supporting ingredients, and they are among the products my patients rely on most. Because they are prescription strength, we prescribe them after a consultation and guide you through how to use them.
Prescription only. ZO’s hydroquinone creams are not sold on ZO’s public website; we provide them through our office after a consultation.

What are ZO’s hydroquinone creams?
ZO Pigment Control Crème and Pigment Control + Brightening Crème each contain 4% hydroquinone and are prescription only. They are typically applied to the affected areas twice a day or as your physician directs, always with daily sunscreen, and used in planned courses rather than indefinitely.

Why Hydroquinone Requires a Prescription
Since 2020, hydroquinone skin-lightening products can no longer be sold over the counter in the United States. Hydroquinone at prescription strength works by slowing the production of melanin, the pigment behind brown spots, and it needs to be used with care: on the right kind of pigment, for the right length of time, and with strict sun protection.
That is why we start with a skin consultation to confirm what type of pigment you have, whether it is sun damage, melasma or dark marks after acne, and to build the plan around it.
How We Use Hydroquinone at The Naderi Center
- Consultation: we look at your pigment, your skin type and your history, including pregnancy plans and past reactions.
- A planned course: hydroquinone is used for a set period, then paused. We do not recommend long, uninterrupted use.
- Daily sunscreen: without it, pigment comes right back. Tinted options like ZO Smart Tone SPF 50 add protection against visible light.
- Maintenance between courses: non-prescription ZO brighteners such as Brightalive, Retinol Skin Brightener and 10% Vitamin C help keep results.
- In-office treatments when needed: such as chemical peels. For melasma, we avoid BBL light treatments, which can make it worse.
What to Expect and Possible Side Effects
Hydroquinone lightens pigment gradually, so patience matters. Some redness, dryness or irritation can happen, especially at first. Call us if irritation is significant or does not settle, or if you notice any unusual darkening.
Hydroquinone is not used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Melasma in particular can return with sun exposure and hormonal changes, which is why maintenance and sun protection continue after a course ends.
Hydroquinone Done Right
Hydroquinone works, but it is a prescription for a reason. I want to know what kind of pigment we are treating before you start, and I want a plan for when you stop. Used in planned courses, with real sun protection and the right maintenance products, it is one of the best tools we have for brown spots and melasma.

What is the difference between Pigment Control Crème and Pigment Control + Brightening Crème?

We use it in planned courses with breaks rather than indefinitely, and we set the schedule with you at your consultation.
Does hydroquinone work for melasma?
