Skin cycling means switching up your evening routine to improve your skin's tolerance of active ingredients like retinoids and get better results, Dr. Alexandra Snodgrass explains. Night one is an exfoliant, night two a pea-sized amount of retinoid, and night three is a recovery night with moisturizer.

So I wanted to get on today and talk about a popular skincare trend called skin cycling. Skin cycling refers to switching up your evening routine to better increase tolerance and efficacy of your active ingredients. In this case, we're talking about retinoids.
So on the first night, you would use an exfoliant. I like a physical exfoliant, and this one's my favorite. It's called ZO Exfoliating Polish. It feels really good, and you just use it after you cleanse your face.
On the next night, you would use your active product. I love the prescription grade stuff. It's the best. Tretinoin, I'm at 0.1 percent. The way that I use this is applying a pea-sized amount to my entire face. That doesn't seem like enough, but this is how you do it. I put a pea-sized amount on my index finger, dot once on my nose, cheek, cheek, chin and forehead, and spread that into a thin layer.
Then the third night is your recovery night. This is when you want to use your favorite moisturizer to counteract the dryness that you may have from using Retin-A the night before. I like to use non-comedogenic stuff, and one of my favorites is this Renewal Facial Cream by EpiOnce. It's a very thin layer, absorbs really well and doesn't leave any residue. Let us know what you think about skin cycling.
