Chemical Peel or Laser Resurfacing? How We Decide What Your Skin Needs

If you have been reading about ways to renew your skin, you have probably come across both chemical peels and laser resurfacing. Both remove older, damaged skin so fresher skin can grow in its place, and both are favorites for patients in Reston, McLean, Arlington and Bethesda each fall.

So how do you know which one you need? Here’s your guide to how we decide.

The short answer: a VI Peel is ideal for sun spots, melasma, dull tone and early fine lines, with about a week of healing. Laser resurfacing is the better choice for deeper wrinkles, acne scars and heavier sun damage.

How a chemical peel works

A VI Peel is a medical-grade solution applied to the skin in layers. Over the following days the outer layer gently sheds, taking sun-damaged cells and uneven pigment with it. The visit takes about thirty minutes, and the peeling is usually complete within a week.

How laser resurfacing works

Laser resurfacing uses light energy to treat the skin at a precise depth. Because the depth can be set for each patient, a laser can go further than a gentle peel, which is why it does more for wrinkles, acne scars and rough texture.

At The Naderi Center we have three resurfacing lasers and choose the one that fits your skin. UltraClear, our most popular, is safe for all skin types. For the deepest wrinkles, Dr. Naderi performs CO2 laser resurfacing in the operating room.

Why UltraClear heals faster than CO2. UltraClear is an erbium fiber laser. Its light is absorbed by water in the skin about 15 times more strongly than a CO2 laser’s, so it removes damaged skin with far less heat spreading into the tissue around it. In a side-by-side study, erbium left about half the heat injury of CO2, and patients healed faster with less lingering redness.

The question is never which treatment is better. It is which treatment matches the depth of the problem. Pigment on the surface needs a different tool than a scar that sits deeper in the skin.

What each one treats best

A VI Peel shines for sun spots and age spots, melasma, dull or uneven tone, rough texture, early fine lines and the dark marks acne leaves behind.

Laser resurfacing is the better match for deeper lines around the eyes and mouth, acne scars, crepey skin and sun damage that has built up over many years.

How do the downtimes compare?

After a VI Peel, expect a day or two of pinkness followed by light peeling, with fresh skin by about day seven. After UltraClear, a lighter treatment usually means five to seven days of healing, and a deeper treatment seven to ten.

Bar chart comparing downtime: a few hours after pico toning, about a day after BBL, 5 to 10 days after pico spot treatment and about 7 days after a VI Peel

Why we use stronger peels less often

Strong TCA peels were once the main way to treat deeper damage. Since adding the UltraClear laser, we use them much less, because the laser treats the same concerns with more control and is safe across every skin tone.

Why fall is the best season for both

New skin is sensitive to sunlight for several weeks after either treatment. From October through February, shorter days make that protection far easier, which is why fall and winter are our busiest seasons for skin renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Is a chemical peel or laser better for wrinkles?

For early fine lines, a VI Peel can help. For deeper wrinkles, laser resurfacing gives a stronger, longer-lasting result.

Is a chemical peel or laser better for acne scars?

Laser resurfacing, along with microneedling or Morpheus8, is the better choice for acne scars. A VI Peel helps fade the dark marks acne leaves.

Which has less downtime?

A VI Peel, with about a week of light peeling. UltraClear usually needs five to ten days, depending on depth.

Can darker skin have laser resurfacing?

Yes. UltraClear is safe for all skin types, from very fair to very dark.

Does UltraClear use less heat than a CO2 laser?

Yes. UltraClear is an erbium laser, whose light is absorbed by water in the skin far more strongly than CO2 light. More of the energy removes damaged skin and less spreads as heat, which means faster healing and less redness.

Where can I get a chemical peel or laser resurfacing near me?

The Naderi Center offers VI Peels in Reston, VA and Chevy Chase, MD, and laser resurfacing at our Reston office.
