How Tight Should a Facelift Be?

Nothing on the face needs to be tight. A facelift should lift, reposition and reset the tissue where it belongs, because normal tissue has glide planes and tightness is what scar tissue feels like.

Key Points from Dr. Naderi

  1. Your face was not tight at 14, 16 or 20, so tight is not the goal.
  2. Feeling very tight right after a facelift is expected from swelling and the local anesthesia fluid in the face. Within a few months it becomes normal.
  3. Some dramatic before and after videos online rely partly on camera angles and how the head is turned.
  4. Expecting tightness leads some patients to feel disappointed and ask to be tightened more, which he says is the wrong expectation.

Ladies, talking to you. Yes, you can apply to the gentleman as well, but mostly the ladies. We gotta stop talking about tight. Nothing on the face needs to be tight.

Nothing was tight. When you were 14 years old, 16 years old, 20 years old, your face was not tight. When you touched it, it did not feel like a plywood. So this whole idea of I want things to be tight, frozen, it's wrong.

Maybe Joan Rivers was tight, for those of you old enough to remember her, but even that wasn't tight. When you think about tight, that's scar tissue. That's not normal tissue. Normal tissue has glide planes.

So yes, immediately after facelift, you may be super tight. You may see these foreign surgeons making these endoscopic facelift videos where before they're kind of turning the patient's head and doing things like this to them. And then afterwards, they're going like this and everything's tighter. First of all, some of that is just angle trickery.

Look, when I do this and do this, it pulls. And when I go this and go like that, oh, nothing's pulling. Some of that is that. However, the other part of it is, yes, you're swollen.

You have a lot of local anesthesia, liquids in your face, swelling, etc. So it's going to be super tight. But trust me, within a few months, it becomes normal. That's normal.

So the idea that your eyelids have to be tight, your eyebrows have to be tight, your neck and everything has to be tight is incorrect. It should be lifted. It should be repositioned. It should be reset and put where it needs to be.

But it doesn't need to be tight. So we've got to get rid of that word from our vocabulary because the expectation of tight after these procedures, for those who get disappointed and say, I'm not tight enough. And I got to go tighten it more, is incorrect. So that's my advice for Friday afternoon.

Have a good one. Bye.
