Question: I’m a guy, age 15, and consulted with a doctor for rhinoplasty. He told me to wait until I’m 18, but I’ve read where surgery can be performed at 16, sometimes even 15. Why would this doctor tell me to wait and are there any reasons why waiting would be good?
Answer: Most of the time we recommend waiting at least till 16 for a rhinoplasty but exceptions can be made as young as 14 if you demonstrate physical and mental maturity. I have 40 year old patients that I refuse to operate or do a rhinoplasty on due to their lack of mental maturity or lack of realistic understanding of risks and limitations of a rhinoplasty. Without seeing you I cannot say why your doctor said wait till 18 years of age before doing a rhinoplasty but there is nothing wrong with waiting and being more cautious.
