Question: I have type 1 diabetes. Are there any concerns about undergoing rhinoplasty?
Answer: We have all of our patients undergo a thorough history and physical examination by their primary care doctors prior to rhinoplasty. I require lab work such as CBC with Platelets as well as PT/PTT/INR and even an EKG if indicated by age. I want to make sure my patients are healthy enough for surgery and if not I want their primary care doctor to optimize their health and get them ready for rhinoplasty. If a patient is just too medically unstable then I try to talk them out of rhinoplasty and will not perform surgery on them. Type I diabetes does not rule you out for a rhinoplasty but it does require proper pre and post op care that your family doctor needs to be involved with. If your diabetes is so labile that you are on an insulin drip then you should avoid elective cosmetic surgery.
