Dear Dr Naderi
I have been told that I have a diviated septum. All the articles that I have read say that the nose is packed off after surgery,
My problem is that I have anxiety attack and hyperventilate when this happens. Is there any way that the nose can remain unpacked so that I can breathe through it.
Thank you
Answer:
Hi,
I do not routinely pack the nose. I often like to place a small sponge inside that I remove the next morning after surgery. This is nowhere close to being as uncomfortable or painful as a true packing.
If anxiety is an issue, sometimes the nose can be left completely open even overnight because of the use of “quilting sutures” on the septum however if you can tolerate the over night Telfa sponge then it would be preferable but not absolutely necessary.
