Question: I’m interested in getting a facelift. I understand that the scar can go both in front of and behind the ear. I tend to wear my hair up and am concerned that I won’t be able to after the surgery as the scar will be very noticeable. Is it possible for women to wear their hair off of their face as in a ponytail after a facelift?
Answer: Great question. I frankly dislike most other plastic surgeons’ facelift scars. No matter how meticulous they are, placing an incision in front of the ear or in front of the temple hair or along the back of the neck at the hair line will always be much more visible than the way I have done it for over 10 years which places the incision and scar behind the ear tragus and within the temple hair and within the hair on the back of the neck. Incisions and scars inside the hair are often more hidden and camouflaged than incisions at the junction of hair bearing skin and bare skin. The only time I place incisions of a facelift in front of the ear is in men since I do not want to move bearded hair into the ear!
