I have lines between my nose and mouth. Are those called nasolabial folds? What’s the best filler for them?
The nasolabial folds are commonly known as “smile lines” or “laugh lines” as these folds of skin become more prominent with these movements of the face. They produce two folds that extend from each side of the nose to the corner of the mouth. The nasolabial folds are normal facial features, but can become more prominent as we age and loose volume from our face and skin. Fillers can replace this lost volume to soften the appearance of the nasolabial folds. The goal of fillers is to soften the appearance of these lines and shadows, not to efface the nasolabial fold completely as this can lead to a wide, unnatural appearance. There are many fillers that can be used in this area. Hyaluronic Acids (HAs) are commonly used to improve the appearance of the nasolabial folds. Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane are different hyaluronic acid fillers that have slightly different characteristics. Radiesse is another temporary filler made of calcium hydroxyapatite that works well in this area in some patients. More important than the filler, is the skill of the injector. It is difficult to make any further recommendations about which filler is right for you before evaluating you in one of our Washington DC office locations.
