I’m nearing 40. I’m not ready for surgery but still I don’t like how my face is aging. My skin just doesn’t look like it used to and I used to always have great skin. I’m in Chevy Chase and I’d like to know if you think laser skin resurfacing could help or if something else might better.
There are several factors that effect how the skin ages, especially sun exposure, tobacco exposure and genetics. The best treatment plan to improve your skin and reverse some of the signs of aging is to begin with an evaluation by a qualified facial plastic surgeon, dermatologist or plastic surgeon. As everyone’s skin is different, it is important to identify what modalities are safe and effective to achieve your individual goals. Laser resurfacing can significantly improve skin texture, age spots, wrinkles and discoloration, but may be an extreme measure for someone less than 40 years old. You may benefit from a nonablative laser procedure that has less downtime and can improve skin texture, discoloration and skin tone but has less dramatic improvement in wrinkles. A nonablative laser heats the deeper layers of the skin to encourage collagen growth and remodeling with minimal damage to the superficial layers of the skin. In my practice (Dr. Jessica Kulak) in Chevy Chase, MD and Herndon, VA we also utilize several types of chemical peels to improve age related skin changes. Furthermore, you may also benefit from a new daily skin regimen.
