I’m 30 and have several minor facial imperfections I’d like to improve including acne and chicken pox scars, along with some sun damage. I’m considering CO2 Laser Resurfacing. What are the postoperative side effects? How long after having the procedure can I go back to work? What precautions would I have to take in terms of sun exposure?
The depth of CO2 laser determines your down time and results. The more aggressive the treatment, the more downtime but the better results – usually. CO2 laser treatments that are done too deep may cause horrific permanent scars and there have been many such cases in the past when the facial laser was done by a non plastic surgeon. CO2 laser can also be done using fractionated laser technology that requires several sessions but each heals quicker. CO2 laser should not be done in anyone with olive skin or darker. Down time can be around 5 days to 3 weeks depending on the depth of treatment and you may have some redness that can remain for weeks or even months. The skin usually does get 1-2 shades lighter after its all healed up. CO2 laser is a fantastic laser but a very powerful and potentially dangerous laser in the wrong hands. Make sure you are having the laser resurfacing done by an experienced plastic or facial plastic surgeon.
