Dear Dr.N. I have a question about my skin. I am an african american female who has ha acne in the past and my face has bad acne scars all over, iv’e tried cocoa butter but it didnt make much of a difference. Is there a medical procedure to help me?
It all depends on the nature of your ance scars. These could be wide, depressed, ice-pick, hypertrophic, erythematous, hyper or hypo pigmented, etc…
Each type of scar has its own treatment. Unfortunately darker skinned patients have more limited options. The best thing is to see a good plastic surgeon or dermatologist with experience in dealing with acne scars in order to be evaluated. Treatments range from skin care, Retin-A, micro-dermabrasion, dermabrasion, peels, lasers, surgery, fat injectio, subcision, etc.
There are risks especially in patients with darker skin and the benefits have to outweigh the risks in order for you to consider any particular procedure.
