Hi,
I have heard that treatment resistant TMD resultant from chronic bruxing can be treated with botox injections into the masseter muscle. I am currently looking for a doctor who has experience with this form of treatment. I noticed that your site mentions that botox can be used for headaches and so I was wondering if the TMD treatment option would also available.
Thanks,
Marie

Hi Marie,
You are correct. Botox has been shown to help with patients who get head aches or TMJ problems (TMD) as a result of dental grinding. It usually takes higher doses than that used for cosmetic reasons in the forehead as the Masseter muscle is a large thick muscle. I have injected many patients’ Masseters for cosmetic and functional reasons. Some Asian patients get Botox injections to this area to reduce the width of the jaw and gain a more balanced look. If you would like to try this treatment, please call the office for an appointment at your convenience.
