I will be undergoing blepharoplasty surgery next month. Do you need to know what vitamin and mineral supplements I am taking? Will I need to discontinue these prior to the surgery?
Answer:
It is extremely important to disclose all medication and supplements to your doctor prior to undergoing any surgical procedure, especially a blepharoplasty or any kind of eyelid surgery. Many over the counter medications and supplements can make you more prone to bleeding and interfere with clotting. Medications that can increase bleeding risk include aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen and supplements such as Vitamin E, fish oil, Coenzyme Q10, Ginseng, garlic, feverfew, and Bromelain to name a few. The effects of these medications on bleeding can last several days to weeks. It’s important to report all supplements and medications to your surgeon, so you can plan appropriately for your eyelid surgery.
