Can malar bags be improved with an eyelid lift?
Malar bags can be a difficult problem to treat. There are many different causes of malar bags or festoons, such as fluid accumulation, fat or volume loss around the area, excessive loose skin and occasionally an underlying medical problem. Depending on the cause and appearance of your malar bags, different options for treatment are available to improve or camouflage their appearance. Generally, eyelid lifts do not significantly improve the appearance of malar bags. Treatment options include laser skin resurfacing, volume replacement in the surrounding area to camouflage and on occasion direct excision of the malar bags. Direct excision can work well in the right patient, but will leave a scar in place of the malar bags, which often looks better. This option is typically performed in older patients with fair skin to minimize the appearance of the resulting scar. It is important that you seek a facial plastic, oculoplastic or plastic surgeon that has experience with malar bags to further discuss your treatment option after a thorough evaluation.
