Since 1999 I have mostly operated in Hospitals or Hospital surgery centers. I find the equipment and safety better. Many plastic surgeons use their own office or a small surgery center to perform elective cosmetic surgery. While some operations like a mini facelift such as a lifestyle lift can be done in such inadequate settings, for my practice which is focused on Rhinoplasty, the proper setting is crucial. I would not easily trust a doctor who uses IV sedation or twilight anesthesia in his own office to perform a rhinoplasty. I certainly would not let any plastic surgeon operate on my nose in that kind of setting. Therefore I have trusted hospitals or hospital surgery centers for the most part.
I was very happy with Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax Virginia for the last 7 years but suddenly they almost doubled their hospital facility fees. Therefore we started taking most of our patients to the Norther Virginia Surgery Center which is a part of Fair Oaks Hospital Complex as well as Suburban Hospital Surgery Center in Bethesda Maryland. Well now Northern Virginia Surgery Center is announcing the major rate increase in their facility fees! Again most plastic surgeons are scrambling to find another place and many of the cosmetic surgeons are now using their own office setting to perform elective cosmetic surgery. I find that dangerous and risky. As such, I think its worth the added cost to the patient to have their rhinoplasty at a nice hospital like fair oaks hospital despite the extra expense. This is elective surgery and short cuts in favor of cutting cost should not trump the need for safety and the best possible surgical outcome.
