Deviated septum corrective surgery in Virginia

The nasal cavity is divided into two roughly equal halves by the nasal septum. About 80 percent of all nasal septums are not exactly in the middle of the nose. A nasal septum that is severely off center is called a deviated septum. This condition can obstruct the airway and cause difficulty breathing through the nose. Proper evaluation of the nasal airway must also address the turbinates (bony structures that project from the lateral wall of the nose into the nasal cavity), which can contribute to symptoms of fluctuant and episodic nasal airway obstruction. Other symptoms can include blockage of one or both nostrils, nasal congestion, frequent nosebleeds and/or sinus infections, facial pain, headaches, postnasal drip, and, in young children, noisy breathing during sleep.

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure performed entirely through the nostrils to straighten the nasal septum and allow for proper breathing and sinus drainage. Septoplasty can be done with a local or a general anesthetic on an outpatient basis. Septoplasty can be combined with rhinoplasty to alter the appearance of the nose as well as provide a comfortable and open nasal airway.

The answer for ears that stick out or protrude (and the end to self-consciousness and teasing) is otoplasty, a surgical procedure that involves reshaping the skin and cartilage behind the ears. The shape and size of the ears can also be altered during surgery. After surgery, soft dressings are placed over the ears for about one week to protect them while they heal and a sports headband may be worn for up to 2 weeks to help hold the ears in place and prevent inadvertent trauma while they heal.

To treat cancer and preserve tissue, a special technique called Mohs micrographic excision is used. This technique, performed by a Mohs surgeon (a super-specialized dermatologist), involves carefully and methodically cutting away (excising) the skin cancer and a small cuff of healthy skin, and evaluating the cells under a microscope. Mohs excision minimizes the size of the facial defect that needs to be reconstructed with the best chance of cure.

Once the skin cancer is fully removed by the Mohs surgeon, Dr. Naderi begins the repair work. This meticulous, intricate reconstruction is dependent on the site and extent of the defect, but may include the use of flaps or, occasionally, skin grafts.

Scar revision in Northern Virginia

Scar revision is performed to reduce the appearance of scars caused by injury or previous surgery. Techniques such as surgery and dermabrasion can narrow, fade and otherwise reduce the appearance of severe or unattractive scarring, which is especially helpful in areas of cosmetic importance such as the face and hands.

Depending on the nature of the scar, multiple procedures over time may be necessary. Sometimes the look or orientation of the scar can be changed to place the scar in a more hidden natural line of the face.

Scar revision should usually be delayed for at least a year from the point of the original injury. However, there are steps that can be taken prior to a surgical scar revision that can help reduce scarring. These steps may involve small injections and/or topical applications.
