IPL (Photorejuvenation)

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation system is a state-of-the-art laser system used by Dr. Naderi at his Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Care Clinics to rejuvenate the skin.  Pulsing lights etch away the years painlessly and effortlessly. Five half-hour sessions are all it takes to remove the signs of aging.  Gone are the spider veins, age spots, discolored sun damaged skin and uneven skin tone.  Birthmarks, rosacea, acne scars, broken blood vessels and undesired facial hair can be treated as well.  Fine lines and wrinkles, and the effects of years of smoking are gone. Photorejuvenation treatment diminishes sun induced skin discoloration, called age spots or liver spots. Treatment reduces the appearance of birthmarks, stretch marks and scars. Have you ever wondered what the effects of the sun have done to your skin? Just look at the underside of your forearm and compare it to the back of your hands. While we all age naturally according to our genetics, the sun’s radiation has added to the natural aging process. The sun’s rays may feel wonderful but they are responsible for the breakdown of two essential components of healthy skin: elastin and collagen. Both elastin and collagen are proteins found in the dermis, the layer of skin just below the epidermis.  They bind with water within the body, hydrating the skin and keeping it smooth and unwrinkled. Elastin keeps the skin flexible and firm. It allows the skin to bounce back to its original position when pulled. Collagen is a protein fiber that forms a healthy mesh within the skin. It supports and cushions the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. There are different types of collagen that change within the skin as we age. One type of collagen is what gives babies such lovely soft skin.

Natural aging causes collagen and elastin synthesis to slow down, but sun damage destroys collagen and elastin prematurely.  Tanning beds and smoking have the same effect. This results in a change in the skin tone, skin texture and even in the skin density. The sun can account for up to 90% of the changes in the skin, from sagging skin with tiny wrinkles to deep lines and folds.  

The sun’s damage extends deep within the skin, yet the IPL Photorejuvenation system laser also reaches the deeper layers to counteract the sun’s damage. As the pulsing light reaches the collagen deep in the dermal layer, the light energy is changed to heat energy. The light targets the deeper tissues while leaving the epidermis untouched. Blood vessels below the epidermis constrict which reduces redness. Dr. Naderi has refined his technique with the IPL Photorejuvenation system to achieve the desired results in thirty to forty-five minutes. Sessions should be spaced approximately three weeks apart, with a total of four to six treatments needed. There is very little risk of complications and absolutely no downtime. IPL can be used on the face, neck, chest and hands. Rarely is the face red after treatment and this may only last an hour or two. Sun avoidance is suggested. Benefits will be seen gradually in the weeks following treatment.
