Filler Injection

Injectable fillers can be used for many different cosmetic treatments, even a non-surgical face lift. Fillers can smooth wrinkles, plump out cheeks, erase pitted scars, fill out the lips and more. With age we become more sure of ourselves, better at our jobs, better able to communicate. We become better at a lot of things, but this comes with a price. The soft, supple skin that we had when we were in our twenties becomes wrinkled. With this simple and quick office procedure, injectable fillers can make you look as young as you feel. Once fillers are injected under the skin, they work by restoring volume and softness, easing the wrinkles and filling sunken areas and creases. Some injectables attract water to plump up the skin; other fillers stimulate the formation of the body’s collagen to keep the face younger looking longer. Each filler has unique properties and uses. Some have short term rejuvenating properties, lasting a few months, and others may provide benefits for years.

Botox®: While not a filler, this injectable blocks nerve impulses to weaken the muscles of the face and relax wrinkles. It is used for wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, mouth and neck

Hyaluronic Acid: There are a variety of fillers made from hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body.

• Hylaform® reduces nasolabial folds, vertical lip lines, frown lines and marionette lines for up to six months.
• Juvederm® is used to reduce the causes of dark circles under the eyes, and is great for lip augmentation and reduction of wrinkles for about six months.
• Restylane® is used for lip sculpting, contouring the face, nasolabial folds and frown lines.
• Captique™ is a gel used to reduce wrinkles and folds around the mouth and nose.

Radiesse®: A synthetic filler made from the same material as our bones, this filler works most effectively on reducing wrinkles and scars by stimulating collagen formation. Results may last one to two years.

Collagen: There are various fillers made from collagen, a natural protein found in the skin.

• Artefill® reduces nasolabial folds and augments the chin and cheeks permanently.
• Cosmoderm® and Cosmoplast® are forms of collagen derived from human tissue and are able to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, smile lines, vertical lip lines, marionette lines, lip border and some scars providing results which last up to six months.
• Zyderm® and Zyplast® are forms of collagen derived from purified cow skin and are commonly used to fill wrinkles, lines and scars on the face and around the lips, providing results that last up to six months.

Prior to injections, alcohol use should be halted as well as any blood thinning medication such as aspirin, vitamin E and NSAIDs. Dr. Naderi will discuss with you the anesthetic used with your filler of choice. Often it is just a topical painkiller applied to the skin and often no anesthetic is needed at all. Some fillers are mixed with lidocaine that will work as the anesthetic. Injections, given on an outpatient basis at both of Dr. Naderi’s offices in the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas, may take from five to fifteen minutes.  They can be done on your lunch hour; there is absolutely no down time. Some patients feel the sting of the injection, and it may depend on the type of filler that you and Dr. Naderi select. Ice may ease this discomfort. Some slight bruising may occur that can be covered easily with makeup. Possible complications include infection, bleeding or bruising, an allergic reaction or the formation of lumps under the skin. If you have any herpes simplex outbreaks, the injections may cause a flare up and you may need to take an antiviral medication.
