Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser Resurfacing

Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser resurfacing is the best known method today for improving skin's appearance. Dr. Naderi uses the new fractional carbon dioxide laser technology in the hospital setting for patient comfort for both the Herndon, Virginia location and the Chevy Chase, Maryland location. He works wonders at rejuvenating the skin by improving overall skin quality. Brown spots caused by sun damage can be improved, skin pores reduced in size, skin texture irregularities can be smoothed out and the skin plumped up through collagen stimulation. With the skill that only years of experience can hone, Dr. Naderi will recreate the skin that you remember from your youth.

Carbon dioxide lasers are ablative lasers, working by essentially vaporizing the surface of the skin by targetting water molecules. This reduces scars, wrinkles and imperfections. Specifically, (CO2) lasers can be used to eliminate fine line on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip, smooth and tighten the skin on both the lower and upper eyelids, improve crow’s feet around the eyes, soften deep frown lines, flatten scar tissue, reduce stretch marks and hyperpigmentation, remove sun freckles and age spots, repair smoker’s lines and rejuvenate the skin by smoothing and polishing the complexion.

Fractionated Carbon dioxide lasers are replacing the older method of dermabrasion for several reasons. The lasers produce a beam of infrared light that can target the area precisely and results in no bleeding. Topical anesthetic gel controls the pain and recovery time is less than a week in many cases. The stimulation of collagen causes improvement for 4-6 months after just one treatment.

Lasers, including carbon dioxide lasers, work by producing short pulses of a single wavelength of light. These pulses last less than a millisecond or one thousandth of a second. This light is extremely intense. It injures the skin in a specified area; consequently this injury causes skin cells to reproduce more rapidly to heal the injury. Deep Wrinkle improvement or acne scar improvement is limited because of the way (CO2) lasers work. They produce heat and to treat the deeper wrinkles or acne scars, more heat is required. This deeper treatment would result in a much longer recover time, perhaps three to four weeks, with the skin remaining red for even longer.

Optimal results require professional skills such as those of Dr. Naderi at the Naderi Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Care Clinics in Herndon, Virginia and Chevy Chase, Maryland. Your consultation with him will determine the settings used for your treatment. This will depend on your skin type, which areas you want addressed and the amount of downtime that you prefer. Most patients require 2-3 treatments spaced two months apart. (CO2) laser resurfacing requires anesthesia. Dr. Naderi may choose tumescent anesthesia which works by injecting large quantities of dilute lidocaine and epinephrine into the area to be treated. The tissues become swollen and firm, or tumesced, allowing resurfacing of the skin. Or he may choose conscious sedation, also called twilight anesthesia. The number of passes of the laser over the treated skin will also be determined at your consultation. General anesthesia is the quickest and most painless method used by Dr. Naderi for Laser Skin Resurfacing at INOVA FAir Oaks Hospital.

As previously mentioned, carbon dioxide laser resurfacing works because it injures the skin and stimulates healing. Side effects can include postoperative pain, swelling, itching and tightness and discoloration. The side effects must be differentiated from complications which might include persistent redness of the face and prolonged healing, infection or allergic reaction to the topical ointments used after the laser resurfacing. You should also be aware that laser skin resurfacing might reactivate latent herpes simplex infections; prophylactic use of an antiviral medicine might be prescribed.
