Chin implant surgery, also known as chin augmentation, is a plastic surgery procedure which uses an implant to improve the appearance of a weak chin and create better balance among the facial features. The procedure takes about thirty minutes to complete and may be performed with MAC (monitored anesthesia care), local anesthesia, or general anesthesia. A very small incision may be made under the chin or inside of the mouth. Once the incision is made, an appropriately size implant is placed under the periosteum. Dr. Naderi uses Mersilene mesh rather the pre-made silastic or medpore implants. Mersilene mesh offers many advantages as there is no risk of shifting, no need for screws, and the implant's edges cannot be felt through the skin. With time, the patient's own scar tissue grows through the implant and the results are very natural.

Recovery after chin augmentation takes approximately seven days. Discomfort may occur during the first few days and this can be controlled with medication. Swelling and bruising are common, and patients may find it difficult to talk and smile at first. Dietary restrictions may be necessary. External stitches may be removed in seven days, while intraoral sutures will dissolve on their own. Most patients may return to work in about five days, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for about two weeks.
