Breast augmentation, also referred to as breast enlargement and augmentation mammaplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which can increase the size of the breasts with the use of implants. Good candidates for breast augmentation include healthy women over the age of eighteen who are looking to improve the size and shape of the breasts and have realistic goals for improvement. The procedure can be beneficial to women who have small breasts or have decreased breast volume as a result of pregnancy or weight loss.
Breast augmentation typically takes one to two hours to complete and may be performed with local anesthesia and sedation or with general anesthesia. The incisions may be located in the crease beneath the breast, within the armpit, around the areola, or on the navel. Once the incisions are made, a saline or silicone gel implant is inserted. The implant may be placed either above the chest muscle or below the chest muscle.
Dressings applied after surgery may be removed within several days, though patients may be required to wear a surgical bra for a period of time. Bruising and swelling is common, and the swelling can take three to five weeks to dissipate. Any discomfort that patients experience can be controlled with medication. Stitches are usually removed within seven to ten days. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days after breast augmentation surgery, though strenuous activities and physical contact with the breasts will need to be postponed for three to four weeks.
