Lip Enhancement
Dear Dr. Naderi,
About 6 weeks ago, I suffered a minor trauma to my upper lip (severed the labial frenulum) causing my upper lip and "moustache area" to swell. People I have asked cannot tell that swelling exists, but I can personally feel and see the minor swelling that has persisted over the past 6 weeks. The doctors I have visited believe that there may be excess blood/fluid in my lip area, causing it to remain swollen. Is there anyway to reduce the swelling through non-surgical treatments, or would cosmetic surgery be the only answer to correct the swelling? I have taken prednisone, diuretics, and ibprofen to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanky ou.
Answer
Hi Alex,
I would have to see you and examine you before I can give you a recommendation. However there may be a combination of factors contributing to your problem. Post-op and post-trauma swelling can persist for months and even years to some extent. Scar tissue deep down can create a swollen look. Damage to muscle or motor nerves or ligaments (frenulum) can affect movement and create an illusion of swelling. All things that should be considered.
As long as you have made sure there is no acute fluid pocket or abscess then all you can do is wait. Massage and steroid injections may be helpful but used judiciously.
I hope this helped. Good luck

Answer
Hi,
I have done many successful surgical lip reductions. It is a simple and elegant procedure that takes about 30 minutes or less with recovery time of about a week or so.
